I began studying composition, theory and guitar in 1995 with instructor Joe Marquand ( I performed and studied bass and saxophone in Concert, Pep, and Marching Band at Leland and Grey High School in Townshend, VT. My education continued in Brevard, NC, where I studied and performed with renowned guitarist Marc Yaxley privately, and later at the University of North Carolina at Asheville (UNCA).

I credit the most beneficial aspect of my education to be the countless “on the job” experiences I gained while working initially with Yaxley and later with Martin Houghtaling (Hendersonville and Spartanburg symphonies), Bill Berg (performed on the Bob Dylan album “Blood on the Tracks”), Bradford Gee (Church Organist and Choir Director at St. James Episcopal in Hendersonville, NC), and many others.

Past performances range from the Grove Park Inn (Asheville, NC), to the Flat Rock Music Festival (Flat Rock, NC), the White Horse w/ the Charles Unger Experience (Black Mountain, NC), Blues Boulevard Jazz (Spartanburg, SC), and Ellington’s Jazz (Fort Myer’s, FL). I perform consistently at Cedric's on the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC.

From June 2019:

"I have taken jazz guitar lessons from Dan for over two years. I highly recommend Dan as a great guitarist and an excellent teacher. He makes lessons fun with his positive, encouraging teaching style. His lessons are oriented around teaching songs so you learn guitar fundamentals in the context of playing real music. He knows a vast repertoire of jazz tunes, and uses them to teach comping and improvising. Dan is flexible about scheduling and tailors his teaching style to his students - both young and old. He teaches in Hendersonville and Asheville, and performs regularly at various venues around the region. I have thoroughly enjoyed learning guitar from Dan!"

"Dan just wanted to thank you for playing at our wedding yesterday! Your playing was the best surprise in a flawless wedding executed by Sara. Everyone's been telling me today how much the enjoyed the music if you have any other gigs this week I'd love to see one while we are still in town. Thanks!"

From March 2015:

"Communication with Dan was exceptional from the first message I sent him. He was always quick to answer questions and adapt to any changes that were made to our wedding time and set up. Originally we asked about having only him play for our ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception, but he suggested that we have him play for the ceremony and cocktail hour and then have his Jazz Trio (bass player, guitarist, and drummer) play for the reception. We thought that sounded like a good idea, and were very pleased with how it turned out. Dan was exceptional as a solo guitarist and chose music that really matched the event. When the trio played for the wedding reception it really livened up the room. Not only that, but they seemed to have a lot of fun together, which made the event even more of a success. I would highly recommend Dan as well as his trio to play at your event. The level of communication and professionalism is a bonus to the fantastic entertainment that they provide. Great chemistry!"

From June 2012:

“For each of the last four years, I’ve been hiring Dan to play his beautiful classical and jazz guitar for professional and annual holiday gatherings. His music is not only technically amazing, he adds to the social atmosphere immeasurably. His playlists and selections seem to always set the right mood allowing people to relax and enjoy themselves—the essence of good jazz. I think he has a keen sense for the ‘arc’ of a given event and he reads his audience in ways not all musicians can. As an event planner, I have so many details to manage. I know I can trust and defer to Dan. He is consummate.”

From February 2012:

"Dan is a bit modest when it comes to his performance, but I will not mince words. Everyone who listens to his playing on my project asks me, " who is that on guitar !!!?"; and if the listener is a musician, they ask "where can I find him!!". His melodic touch makes even the simplest heads take on new meaning. I enjoyed playing with him on my project and would gladly recommend him for any performance or studio project."

From October 2011:

"Recently we organized my son's wedding at 'the Country Club of Asheville'.

For this event we hired Dan Keller to provide Classical guitar music.

Dan performed really admirably, creating a very classy musical environment.

We have got a lot of positive feedback from our guests about the event, and music in particular. Dan's repertoire is very broad, and he is very capable to perform special requests from the public. Dan is an excellent Classical Guitar Professional, he was very easy to work with, and fully fulfilled our expectations. I gladly recommend Dan for weddings and special events, being sure his performance will very much please his clients."
